.: Pressure Profile

When a kite is flying, it creates lift in much the same way as a conventional aircraft. In order to fly it must create enough lift to carry its own weight and with foils, occasionally that of its pilot.

Wind flowing over the surface of the kite is split into two seperate streams at the leading edge [the front]. One stream of air goes under the kite and one stream goes over.

The stream of air which travels below strikes the kite at a shallow angle and this creates a high pressure region, as shown in the diagram. About one third of the kites pull is derived from this pushing effect.

The stream which travels over the upper surface is required to take a longer path as it is forced upwards over the camber of the top surface. As this curve continues, the flow is directed further upwards, while at the same time the air above the foil is trying to continue in the same direction without altering course. This process is strengthened by the flow tending to drift away from the curved surface.

This results in a squeezing of the air stream flowing over the top of the kite. It is squeezed between the physical barrier of the kite below and the inertia of the 'normal' air above.

This action creates an acceleration of the air flow over the top surface of the kite. A result of this acceleration is a reduction in pressure [Bernoulli's theorem]. This low pressure area generates a pulling force and contributes approximately two thirds of the lifting force of a wing.
